The work of Adam Šakový (1987) is part of a new wave in Slovak painting that again poses questions about the zone in which images emerging through the medium of painting intersect with images created with mechanical, digital or other industrial media. In Šakový’s case, the space for confrontation is provided by the medium of photography, which in its digitized form turns a photograph into a formal pre-image, or the opposite, of the painting. Today, the viewer’s uncertainty about the technique used to create a picture is not only relevant to the domain of painting; in this time of computers and 3D modelling, it is now almost constantly provoked in the realms of photography and film as well. Šakový inhabits the media environments of both painting and photography with a confidence deriving from his precise use of the techniques of illusion, which results in the mutual intertwinement of these media. It has become the purpose of his artistic work to overcome the unique problems that arise when trying to use these media and technologies together. He deliberately induces doubt in the viewer, who wonders whether she is looking at a painting of a photograph or a photograph of a painting – or at both simultaneously. However, this artist’s playfulness is reflected not only in his use of technical anagrams and his testing of the viewer’s capacity to distinguish among visual stimuli. Equally deliberate and interesting are the topics upon which he focuses his artistic examinations. For example, at one time, sheep were an emblematic motif in his works. In Šakový’s pictures, creatures usually immediately associated either with gentleness, at best, or irresponsibility, at worst (and frequently linked with ideological manipulability), become autonomous personalities, portrayed with their own faces, and even a charismatic radiance. In addition, Šakovy’s works exhibit the dignity of an almost Renaissance chiaroscuro, reinforced by his skillful use of the airbrush, with its powerful ability to create the sense of illusion. It might be that this quality is the artist’s own version of the “visual illusion trap”, with a slightly ironic undertone. Currently, Šakový’s artistic assays have been directed to the very core of the photographic image, which he deconstructs with either painting interventions or skillful image transfers between the media. The paintings of Adam Šakový can be considered a serious experiment by an inter-media artist, a painter’s game with classical trompe l'oeil, or a photographer’s attempt to conduct a thorough analysis of his medium through the intervention of another.
