V rámci programovej línie preferovania súčasného vizuálneho umenia Galéria Schemnitz prezentuje dvojicu slovenských autorov strednej generácie – Viktora Freša (1974) a Jána Vasilka (1979). Ide o ich prvý  vzájomný vizuálny „battle“ – Frešových ironických objektov „hlavúňov“ a de-konštruktívnych maliarskych projekcii Vasilka.    

Viktor Frešo, ktorý absolvoval štúdia na bratislavskej a pražskej akadémii umenia, sa programovo sústreďuje na jedno razantné podvratné gesto, koncentrovaný elementárny tvar a zásadnú výpoveď „na tvrdo“ (ele-mentálne gesto). Neustálevytvára nové kritické a vyostrené situácie,  kde práve spojenie triezveho konceptus punkovým prístupom vytvárajú  jeho osobitú rebelskú poetiku.  S istou dávkou irónie, vtipu a potrebného dištancu tvorí celý rad nefunkčných objektov a kombinovaných novotvarov. Ide o hraničnú podobu sochy a jej akceptovateľnosti, minimalistickú formu, či zásah do fragmentu nájdeného objektu (ready-made). Frešo prináša sériu autorských„mongoloidných“ hláv v rozličných formách a prevedeniach – elegantných, rodovo inverzných, či expresívnych a preexponovaných „Gebuliek“.

V tvorbe mladšiehoJána Vasilka, absolventa košickej Katedry výtvarných umení a intermédií TU, je zrejmý koncentrovaný maliarsky jazyk avlastné formátovanie obrazovej plochy. Je založené na geometrickom štylizovaní s podivnou kombinatorikou starých architektúr a nových projektov „Návrhov na Múzeum súčasného umenia“, s množstvom poletujúcich industriálnych prvkov, súčiastok a vymyslených dielcov, či vytváraní abstraktných kompozícií hustých dynamických línií a lomených siločiar. Paralelne však Ján Vasilko naďalej rozvíja osvedčenú ikonografiu industriálnych konštrukcií a predmetov (klasy, kombajny, píly, sekery, bagre), od roku 2014 aj v konfrontácií s interpretáciami klasikov moderného umenia (Duchamp, Picabia, Picasso, Malevič, El Lisickij a pod.). V jeho akrylových plátnach prevláda mechanický balet objektov a foriem na hranici figurálnosti a geometrickej abstrakcie.

V tomto dvojstretnutí ide o individuálne odklonenie sa od zažitých schém, aj o ikonické klonovanie, teda ro-zmnožovanie umenia a hľadanie nových silných ikon v súčasnej vizuálnej kultúre. To prináša u oboch autorov definovanie vlastného mediálneho, „rozhrania“, hravosť a ľahkosť podania aj sýtu výtvarnú hostinu pod Sitnom. Nakoniec je to aj symbolické a sympatické stretnutie Košíc a Bratislavy v strede Slovenska.

Viktor Frešo (nar. 1974 v Bratislave) – študoval na VŠVU v Bratislave (1999 – 2001) a absolvoval Akadémiu výtvarných umení v Prahe 2005 (Ateliér nových médií doc. Michala Bielického). Ceny: Finalista Ceny Oskara Čepana 2009. Spoluzakladateľ Ceny Ego Art a Kressling Gallery v Bratislave. Ján Vasilko (nar. 1979 v Humennom) – absolvent Fakulty umení TU v Košiciach 1999 – 2005 (Ateliér súčasného obrazu doc. A. Szenpéteryho). Študijné pobyty: VŠVU Bratislava (2003), AVU Praha (2004). Ocenenia: Víťaz ceny Oskara Čepana (2005); 2 miesto súťaže Maľby roka VÚB Banky (2008, 2012); Víťaz Strabag Art Award International Viedeň (2009); Finalista Ceny 333, Národná galéria Praha (2010). Rezidencie: 2005 – ISCP Studios, New York; 2009 – Strabag Art Studios, Wien; 2009 – FKSE Studios, Budapešť. Vasilko žije v Košiciach, kde aj pedagogicky pôsobí na Katedre výtvarných umení a intermédií FU TU v Košiciach.

During September and October of 2017, Schemnitz Gallery’s programme of contemporary visual art exhibitions will feature two Slovak artists of the country’s “middle” generation – Viktor Frešo (1974) and Ján Vasilko (1979). The exhibition is their first visual “battle”: Frešo’s ironic “head-like” objects with Vasilko’s de-constructive painting projections.

Viktor Frešo, who graduated from the Art Academies in Bratislava and Prague, focuses on making one resolute, subversive gesture, a concentrated elementary shape and principal, bold statement (“ele-mental” gesture). He persistently creates new critical and intense situations where he connects a sober concept with a punk approach, thus filling his artwork with a distinctively rebellious poetry. With a certain amount of irony, humour and distancing, he creates a whole range of dysfunctional objects and new formations. They are sculptures residing at the margins, in terms of their images and acceptability, presented in minimalistic form or as a fragment of found object (“ready-made”). Frešo brings a series of original distorted heads in a number of forms and versions – elegant and gender-reversed or expressive and overexposed “Noggins”.

In the work of the younger Ján Vasilko, a graduate of the Fine Art and Inter-Media Department of the Technical University in Košice, a concentrated language of painting and his own formatting of the picture space are apparent. His paintings are either based on presenting geometric structures with unusual combinations of old architectures and new projects of “Proposals for a Contemporary Art Museum”, featuring a number of floating industrial elements, spare parts and made-up items, or on creating abstract compositions of thick dynamic lines and refracted field lines. In parallel, Ján Vasilko continues to develop a verified iconography of industrial structures and items (spikelets, harvesters, saws, axes, excavators); since 2014, doing so in confrontation with interpretations of the modern art classics (Duchamp, Picabia, Picasso, Malevich, El Lissitzki, etc.). His acrylic canvases ‒ a mechanical ballet of objects and forms ‒ position themselves on the border between figural painting and geometric abstraction.

In this meeting of two, an individual diversion from conventional schemes takes place, i.e., the “re-production” of art and the search for new powerful icons in the contemporary visual culture. This endeavour allows for the authors to define their own media “interface”, offering playfulness and lightness of presentation as well as a rich art feast below Mount Sitno. In addition, the meeting of these two artists is a symbolic and congenial encounter of Košice and Bratislava in the centre of Slovakia.
